Quietly opening in December last year, Fairfield’s Two Fat Monks has recently launched its new menu and opened an in-house bakery, and plans to open an onsite coffee roastry later this year.

Co-owner Ulysses Vass has used the last six months to assess operations and gradually introduce new ideas following feedback from customers. ”After running the café for the first few months we’ve been able to get an idea of what Fairfield is after. We’ve been overwhelmed with requests to open for dinner, so we’ve now extended our hours on Friday and Saturday till 9pm”, Vass says.

The new menu features breakfast dishes (served 7.30am–12pm) such as mushroom benedict and corn fritters. The lunch menu (served 12pm–3pm) includes the corn fritters stack and all-day breakfast items like the farm yard eggs with slow-cooked beef brisket. The dinner menu (served from 5.30pm–9.00pm) on Friday and Saturday is a mix of the lunch menu and specials.

Breakfast cocktails such as the Goldentini, a mix between an espresso martini and a chaitini or the Dirty Mary, a take on a Bloody Mary but with a strip of bacon are also now on the menu. For those wanting a small bite, a sharing menu is available after 12pm and includes truffled potato croquettes and pulled beef tacos.

Designed by Urban Workroom, Two Fat Monks is also available for private events, offering an industrial warehouse aesthetic with its large retractable windows, bare brick walls and polished concrete floors while emanating a cosy feel with its booth seating. “We had lots of regulars asking if they could hold birthdays at night, so we’re now catering for evening events,” he says.

A new on-site bakery now means all baked goods are made in-house, including cakes, gateaux and petits fours. Plans for the new on-site coffee roastry will add another edgy element to the interior. “The roastry will visible from the main cafe area so customers can see their beans being freshly roasted, not to mention the subtle coffee bean scent it will omit,” he says.
