Stepping into Penny Farthing Espresso is stepping back in time and the decor and collectables displayed  lay testament to this. Immediately I’m greeted by a beaming smile by proprietor Trevor Simmons , that tantalising aroma of their own Industry Beans Espresso Coffee, and the magical ambience of this place. Reassurance that I am about to enjoy a very satisfying experience.?  As I waited for my companion’s arrival I watched as cup after cup, was lovingly prepared and  swiftly dispensed and as they wafted past,  It struck me that even on a Tuesday morning every table, front and back was full and as the sun came out the charming little outdoor courtyard packed out in a minute!

I was presented with two menus, an espresso menu and the expected food variety. I have never seen an Espresso Menu like this with tasting notes offering such detail and explanation.  Illustrating a  certain experience with a certain coffee blend.  It was akin to a wine list with it’s comprehensive descriptions of blends an limited release single origin coffees.?After intense analysis, I opted for the Fitzroy St Blend, the signature blend of their Industry Beans label.  Trevor and Steven Simmons, the instigators and developers of the Industry Beans brand, have  handpick the best beans  through discerning cupping and  then a special unique roasting process., all done at their roaster located nearby in Fitzroy. They accompany the coffee with the notes from the cupping so as to offer a complete tasting experience to their customers.

Penny Farthing caters for those fanatical coffee purists who demand the quintessential cup of coffee or just a customer that wants a comfy environment, read the paper and enjoy a good relaxing cup!

My choice, Soy Latte is soon placed in front of me, it offers the exact nutty and intense flavour characteristics  promised in the tasting notes along with some coffee art to top it off. It loses nothing on the tasting, simply delicious.  I decided to push my caffeine limits a little and try another, this time a Limited Release Single Origin at Trevor’s recommendation.

In a conversation with Trevor, one quickly gathers how intensely passionate these brothers are about their prize coffee. Byron, Penny Farthing’s head barista places in front of me a single origin short black with its very own tasting notes and map of where the beans originated and back ground on the region. “Mmm”, spot on !    The trouble these guys go to and their pursuit of perfection with coffee is impressive.  Penny Farthing caters for  those fanatical coffee purists  who demand  the quintessential  cup of coffee or just a customer that wants a comfy environment, read the paper and enjoy a good relaxing cup!
