Dedicated to providing plus size women with a positive shopping experience, A Plus Market is a clothing market held regularly in Preston that features second-hand clothing in sizes 16 and up, alongside designers and businesses that celebrate plus size women.

The market features local independent designers who offer unique pieces, fashion forward designs and quality fabrics. While the market’s focus has been on Melbourne based designers and makers, its growing popularity has businesses and individuals from further afield keen to get involved.

Luxury t-shirt brand Ruby and Lilli travelled from interstate to attend the recent September market, showcasing their fun tees that are available in sizes up to 6X (AU28). Other businesses at the recent market included Pretty Vixen, who offer skirts made from vintage recycled fabrics, Mad Legs, who make cotton rich leggings up to size 22 in every colour of the rainbow, and Marji and Jean, whose vintage inspired dresses come in a range of bold prints.

This is just a small sample of the variety of designers and businesses that attend,  many of whom are making waves in the plus size fashion world; at the time of the September market, A Plus regulars Hope and Harvest were attending New York Fashion Week Plus. The market also often offers shoppers a chance to try on clothing from brands that are otherwise exclusively online.

Around half of all Australian women identify as plus size, but plus size clothing is often relegated to small corners in major stores, if at all.”

Alongside these designers, the market always has a large range of second-hand clothing, inviting women to clear out their closets and sell their pre-loved fashion and accessories. The market offers a chance to shop sustainably and ethically in a body positive environment and buying recycled or second-hand garments is a great way to save money while updating your wardrobe.

As well as plus size fashion, the market also showcases local crafters, often offering artisan jewellery, soaps, candles, cosmetics,  as well as food and refreshments.

Shopping as a plus size woman can often be alienating and disheartening, but A Plus Market offers a warm community space of fashion and acceptance, where women are permitted to feel and look beautiful. Around half of all Australian women identify as plus size, but plus size clothing is often relegated to small corners in major stores, if at all.

Market founder and local mum, Erin Cox says the response so far has been wonderful, and that “women are delighted, rejoicing that they now have a welcoming community and a myriad of fashion choices at their fingertips. Women are empowered through fashion and proud to be themselves.”

The next A Plus Market is Sunday 15th November, from 10am-3pm at Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre in Preston. Check aplusmarkets.com for upcoming market dates and details.
