Melbourne Rising is the newest addition to Melbourne’s rich sporting landscape. The fledgling Rugby team will take part in the 2014 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC).

The recently named squad comprises of contracted Rebels players along with a smorgasbord of young talent from the local Dewar Shield Competition and Victorian Juniors. All nine Dewar Shield clubs are represented, with Footscray, Harlequin and Endeavour Hills leading the charge with six representatives apiece. Two Wallabies have also been added to the list – Scott Higginbotham and Luke Jones.

Melbourne Rising Head Coach Sean Hedger is optimistic about his team’s chances and in the club’s media release he said, ‘Selecting the final squad was a difficult task, however we are confident that the Rebels and Dewar Shield players selected are all more than capable of being a major force in this competition. It’s a wonderful opportunity for every member of the squad, and I’m looking forward to getting started.’

Hedger went on to point out how competitive it was for spots by saying, ‘We’ve had the opportunity to watch these local players as part of the Extended Training Squad, and are very pleased with the abilities of those selected. Indeed, we have had to leave out a number of players who really impressed us.’

Melbourne Rising’s first game (against the North Harbour Rays) kicks-off on Sunday August 24 at 2pm at AAMI Park, with three more big home games scheduled against Perth Spirit and Canberra Vikings (11th and 28th Sep) and Queensland Country on October 18.

The National Rugby Championship is the ultimate platform for success for aspiring Rugby players, with Coach Sean Hedger saying on the club’s website, ‘For the players selected from the Dewar Shield, it’s an opportunity to play at a higher level on a national stage and press claims for a professional contract.’

He also invites everyone along to support the new team, ‘To the Melbourne public, I look forward to seeing you all at AAMI Park to welcome your city’s newest sporting team – the Melbourne Rising.’
