It’s teasing us, this summer. We had a week of heat, then we were plunged into the deluge. But if you build it, it will come, so let’s make a concerted group effort to will the summer to be wonderful.

First step, let’s think of, or more powerfully, go to the kinds of places that are perfect in the warm weather. Clearly there are many and we all have our favourites. This is, by no means a prescriptive or definitive list. It’s just a list to get us started.

Let’s go.

STREAT66 Cromwell St, Collingwood

Housed in the heritage Cromwell Manor, social enterprise STREAT’s large outdoor seating area and family-friendly landscaped garden is the ideal spot to soak up some summer rays over the festive season. Abundant with greenery, striped hammocks and deck chairs, guests can indulge in STREAT’s produce from its onsite artisan bakery and roastery, along with a cafe-style menu. And better yet, the site is pet-friendly!

The Rooftop at QT133 Russell Street, Melbourne

Showcasing views of the spectacular Melbourne city skyline, The Rooftop at QT is a great spot in summer – a place to quench your thirst while taking in the heart and soul of the Melbourne from above

Some of Melbourne’s finest bartenders will serve up a hand-crafted cocktail list showcasing a twist on classic favourites, while the menu will also boast a list of local spirits, house-made tonics and share cocktails. There is also bar food.

Summer operating hours from Friday 1st December, 12pm – late from Thursday – Sunday

Piccolina Gelateria296 Smith Street, Collingwood

Since its inception in 2015, Piccolina Gelateria has treated Melbourne to its selection of all natural, authentic Italian gelato made using time honoured family recipes passed down to owner, Sandra Foti, by her father and perfected over time through study and research in Italy

With flavours including: Better Than Nutella (gf); Passionfruit (gf,v); and Choc Brownie with 70.5% dark chocolate (gf, v); guests will be spoilt for choice. And that’s not including the cult classics and weekly seasonal specials.

Handmade in-store each day Piccolina’s gelato is 100% natural and free from artificial ingredients, food additives, preservatives, thickeners, gelatines or colour.

Piccolina Gelateria is open daily from 12pm

The Rooftop at Union House, Swan Street, Richmond

Union House opened in the winter months and even then, the desperadoes were enjoying the range of wine Magnums on the rooftop because, well, why wouldn’t you? It’s pretty darned great up there, whatever the temperature. But imagine it on a balmy night. Cocktails, beer, rockling burgers. Hell yeah.

Mama Manoush, 175-177 Lygon Street, East Brunswick

The iconic Middle Eastern flavours of Mama Manoush have moved from Fitzroy to East Brunswick with a fabulous ‘back yard’ complete with astro turf and a spray fan. I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to stand in front of a spray fan while waiting for your Mama’s kata to come out.

Welcome to Thornbury, 520 High Street, Northcote

Who doesn’t love a Food Truck? Wandering around, catching the scent of something delicious on the air, and hunting it down. Welcome to Thornbury has a great selection of beverages as well and lots of fun things planned over the summer months. Check out the Christmas market on December 13th and the tinny festival on December 16th. There is a revolving array of food trucks and an excellent vibe.

Floating Bars

Choose between Arbory Afloat, designed to make you think of Palm Springs and Supafish, a glowing, slotting pop-up a little further down. Both offer drinks, food and the delightful splash splash of the river.
