Addict have been occupying the sunny corner of Johnston and Gore Streets for a couple of years now and they continue to nail it. Consistently good food, excellent coffee and friendly staff; key ingredients for happy times.

The menu has a good variety of lighter through to more substantial fare, with enough flair in the dishes to make good old classics interesting without overdoing it.

Had I not been overcome by a wave of virtuousness and been craving grains, fruit and yoghurt, I would have been tempted by the specials board flaunting a mash up of two fairly iconic Melbourne café staples; avocado smash with Dr Marty’s crumpets. I went the way of the granola, but it was touch and go for a moment.

Coffee is by Market Lane with some subbing in and out of other single estate beans for espresso and filter coffees. The barista team have their game player faces on and are taking no prisoners. Their commitment to consistently good coffee is palpable.

It’s a fairly small space to navigate but service is seamless and the waitstaff get food and coffee to the tables in an almost choreographed display of efficiency and ease.

It gets busy at the weekends, but get your timing right, turn your face to the sun and let the shadows fall behind at Addict.

Jo is a French teacher, a freelance writer and needs good coffee to start her day. Armed with an exotic New Zealand accent and a winning (hopefully) smile, she likes nothing better than roaming the streets of the northside in search of new and old food-related wonders.
